LAS VEGAS (AP) — A judge has set a hearing next Tuesday for a man facing murder and eight other felony charges in a shooting outside a steak and sushi restaurant in Las Vegas. Carim Cruz is also charged with attempted murder, assault and battery in the Aug. 16 shooting outside the Geisha House on Flamingo Road. Police say Deanna Serano was killed when Cruz fired several shots from a vehicle into a crowd in the parking lot.
INDIAN SPRINGS, Nev. (AP) — Authorities say a man who was serving a murder sentence in a southern Nevada prison has died in an apparent suicide. Prison officials say 40-year-old Jonathan Van Hook was found unresponsive on Sunday in his solitary cell in High Desert State Prison. Van Hook was serving 15 years to life in prison after being convicted in Clark County of second degree murder of a victim over the age of 65.
LAS VEGAS (AP) — A group of retirees is planning to protest Congressman Joe Heck's stance on Social Security and Medicare outside of a private event he's set to attend in Henderson. Officers with the Nevada Alliance for Retired Americans say they'll rally outside the Revere Golf Club this morning, targeting the Republican lawmaker's record on health care reform, veterans' benefits, women's issues and more.
NORTH LAS VEGAS, Nev. (AP) — City officials are working to bulldoze 20 abandoned homes throughout North Las Vegas that have become hotspots for criminal activity, squatters and fires. Some $400,000 from a federal grant will be devoted to the project. The city will place a lien on the empty lots so it can recover the costs of demolition if the properties are sold.
