RENO, Nev. (AP) — Local activists and leaders of the NAACP in Nevada are joining the call for the immediate arrest of a Ferguson police officer who shot and killed an unarmed 18-year-old Missouri man. Officials for the Nevada NAACP and the Progressive Leadership Alliance of Nevada delivered letters with their demands to the U.S. attorney offices in Reno and Las Vegas.
LAS VEGAS (AP) — A projected record 320,000 children are beginning a new school year in the Las Vegas area. Meanwhile, administrators in the nation's fifth-largest school district say they're facing funding, space and teacher shortages. Clark County's School Superintendent says more elementary schools will go to year-round schedules to ease overcrowding. The district has more than 600 teacher positions open.
LAS VEGAS (AP) — A 55-year-old Las Vegas convenience store clerk is facing attempted murder and other charges after police say he shot a man in the head as he ran from the store with a 24-pack of stolen beer. Friends drove the injured man to nearby Sunrise Hospital & Medical Center, where police say he was treated for a gunshot that struck behind his ear and exited his face.
NORTH LAS VEGAS, Nev. (AP) — City officials are working to bulldoze 20 abandoned homes throughout North Las Vegas that have become hotspots for criminal activity, squatters and fires. A City Manager says $400,000 from a federal grant will be devoted to the project. The city will place a lien on the empty lots so it can recover the costs of demolition if the properties are sold.
