SAN DIEGO (AP) — San Diego lifeguards have found the body of an exchange student from Ghana a day after his kayak capsized in Mission Bay.
San Diego Fire-Rescue spokesman Lee Swanson says a lifeguard dive team recovered the body of 17-year-old Abdu Razak Shanun Sunday morning in about 25 feet of water.
The search for the teenager was launched around 3 p.m. Saturday when witnesses saw his rented kayak capsize midway across the bay. The witnesses told lifeguards held onto a life preserver for a time, then apparently lost his hold on it.
Swanson said divers went in the water and lifeguards searched from boats, looking for the kayaker in the murky bay water. After an hour, the rescue effort switched into a recovery operation.
