EDGARTOWN, Mass. (AP) — Two senior administration officials say the White House is conducting a review of programs that have equipped local police with military gear. It follows President Barack Obama's call for more separation between the armed forces and civilian law enforcement. The review comes in the aftermath of the police response to unrest in Ferguson, Missouri.
NEW YORK (AP) — New York City police say they made no arrests during a peaceful protest march against police brutality. More than 2,500 people turned out today on Staten Island to protest the chokehold death of an unarmed black man by a white police officer. The crowd was motivated by the death of Eric Garner, an asthmatic father of six who was stopped for selling loose cigarettes
BAGHDAD (AP) — Officials in Iraq say bombings in Baghdad and the northern city of Kirkuk have killed at least 42 people. Police say three bombs went off in a crowded commercial district of Kirkuk on Saturday, killing 31 people. Earlier in Baghdad, police say a suicide car bomber struck an intelligence headquarters, killing six civilians and five security officers.
PARIS (AP) — Ethnic Kurds in France are demanding more international support for civilians in Iraq facing assaults by Islamic State militants. Hundreds of protesters marched in Paris on Saturday. They want more humanitarian and military aid for thousands of Yazidi refugees in the Sinjar mountains. There have been peaceful weekly protests since militants attacked Sinjar earlier this month.
MIAMI (AP) — The National Hurricane Center in Miami says a tropical depression has formed and is dumping heavy rains on parts of Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic as it heads for the Bahamas. The system is expected to strengthen and a tropical storm warning has been issued for the Turks and Caicos and parts of the Bahamas. The storm could bring up to 8 inches of rain.
