LAS VEGAS (AP) — University Medical Center has eliminated more than 200 positions in a second round of layoffs at Las Vegas' only public hospital.
Officials say they're ending their outpatient oncology, outpatient pharmacy and Lied clinic services. Layoffs are hitting nurses, office assistants and other support staff.
UMC has been struggling to overcome a decade of financial hardships. The hospital provides millions of dollars of care each year to uninsured patients who can't pay their bills.
UMC needed a $70 million subsidy from Clark County this year to balance its budget, and took out another $45 million in emergency loans.
Hospital board chair and Clark County Commissioner Lawrence Weekly said he was devastated by the cuts but said the hospital will need to be run more like a business to succeed.
