ATLANTA (AP) — The charity an American doctor infected with Ebola works for says he's now recovered from the virus and will be released today from an Atlanta hospital. Dr. Kent Brantly and colleague Nancy Writebol were flown out of the West African nation of Liberia earlier this month and have been getting treatment at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta. The hospital will hold a news conference later this morning to discuss the release of both health care workers.
MONROVIA, Liberia (AP) — Officials from the World Health Organization are visiting two hospitals in Liberia that are in an area authorities have sealed off to help prevent the spread of the Ebola virus. Meanwhile, calm has returned to the sealed-off slum of West Point after clashes between protesters and security forces. A nighttime curfew also has been put in place. Authorities say Ebola is spreading fast in Liberia.
WASHINGTON (AP) — The Obama administration is not ruling out the prospect of a military operation in Syria to bring to justice those responsible for an American journalist's beheading. The administration revealed Wednesday that President Barack Obama sent special operations troops to Syria this summer on a secret mission to rescue American hostages held by Islamic State extremists. But the hostages were not at the location intelligence had identified.
NEW DELHI (AP) — Officials in northern India say a crowded minibus veered off a mountain road and fell into a gorge today, killing at least 22 people. Police and volunteers pulled the bodies from the 500-foot-deep gorge in the Himalayan foothills. And rescuers used ropes to pull out 17 injured people.
BERLIN (AP) — Authorities in Germany have arrested a hospital doctor on suspicion he drugged and sexually abused female patients participating in a fake clinical study he had set up. German news agency dpa reports that the unidentified 48-year-old worked at a clinic in the Bavarian town of Bamberg. The case came to light after a young woman went to police for help last month, and blood tests confirmed she had been sedated against her will.
