HARVEY, Ill. (AP) — The Cook County sheriff says a hostage standoff in the Chicago suburb of Harvey has ended without a shot being fired. Sheriff Tom Dart says the last four hostages were released unharmed this morning and two suspects have been arrested. The standoff began about 21 hours earlier when police in the small city responded to a neighbor's report of a possible burglary at the home.
ST. LOUIS (AP) — The funeral for 18-year-old Michael Brown is scheduled for Monday morning at a church in St. Louis. Brown's uncle, the Rev. Charles Ewing, will deliver the eulogy, and the Rev. Al Sharpton will also speak. Brown, who was black, was killed Aug. 9 by a white police officer in Ferguson. The shooting has sparked protests and more than a week of unrest in the predominantly black St. Louis suburb. Things were calmer last night, but police still made 47 arrests.
GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip (AP) — Hamas says its military chief was not present during an Israeli strike on a Gaza Strip house that killed his wife and son along with three other people. Mohammed Deif has escaped numerous Israeli assassination attempts in the past. Israel has not commented on the strike, but says it has carried out nearly 100 airstrikes on Gaza targets, and that Palestinians have fired more than 140 rockets at Israel since a truce collapsed yesterday.
KIEV, Ukraine (AP) — Ukrainian troops are fighting to gain control of the rebel-held city of Donetsk as well as a major railroad and a highway that leads to Russia. The Kiev-backed administration in Donetsk says 34 local residents have been killed in the fighting there, while the Ukrainian National Security Council says nine troops were killed in overnight fighting in a town (Ilovaysk) near Donetsk. Meanwhile, authorities in Luhansk say government troops and rebels have been fighting running battles in the streets of the besieged city.
OAKHURST, Calif. (AP) — California fire officials say residents who evacuated their home because of a wildfire burning near Yosemite National Park should be allowed to return later today. The flames drove about 1,000 people from their homes in the Madera County community of Oakhurst. Firefighters now have the blaze about 40 percent contained.
