FERGUSON, Mo. (AP) — After several nights of clashes between police and protesters in Ferguson, Missouri, the governor is bringing in the National Guard in hopes of restoring order. Gov. Jay Nixon's announcement came after the latest clash last night, when about 100 people protesting the deadly police shooting of a black teen refused to go home when state police began clearing the streets three hours ahead of a midnight curfew. Police say there was gunfire, looting and vandalism.
LONDON (AP) — A spokesman for WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange (ah-SAHNJ') says there seems to be some confusion over a news conference Assange held this morning in which he said his health was suffering and he would soon leave the Ecuadorean Embassy in London — where he's been holed up for more than two years. Assange's spokesman says the 43-year-old will not leave the Embassy unless an impasse on his extradition is resolved. Assange is wanted in Sweden for alleged sex crimes. Ecuador granted him refugee status, but British police won't let him leave the country.
GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip (AP) — Hamas is being accused of placing scores of activists from the rival Fatah movement under house arrest in Gaza. And Fatah officials say several people were shot in the legs for not staying indoors during the war with Israel. One man who was attacked says Hamas gunmen shot him in both legs. Sami Abu Lasheen says he'll need several months to recover. The alleged shootings come despite a power-sharing deal between Hamas and Fatah's leader, Western-backed Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas (mahk-MOOD' ah-BAHS').
MOSCOW (AP) — Ukraine says rebels in the east of the country have fired rockets and mortars on civilians, killing many people, including women and children. A spokesman for Ukraine's national security council says the civilians were trying to escape intense fighting in the region. The barrage happened between two towns that lie on the main road leading to the besieged city of Luhansk.
SOUTH BRUNSWICK, N.J. (AP) — A New Jersey farm family has created an amazing tribute to New York Yankees captain Derek Jeter. They've carved an image of Jeter and a thank you message in a five-acre corn field. The VonThun Farm in South Brunswick is about 55 miles south of Yankee Stadium. "Thanks Captain Clutch" is carved into the maze, along with a baseball with Jeter's No. 2 on it. The family says the maze will be open from Sept. 20 through Halloween.
