PEKIN, Ill. (AP) — A central Illinois hospital has canceled a mission trip to Liberia due to the Ebola outbreak that's killed more than 1,100 people in three West Africa countries.
The Pekin Daily Times (http://bit.ly/1teYh70 ) reports that Pekin Hospital officials decided that that the trip would have put hospital employees at risk.
Sherry Hoffman is Pekin Hospital's assistant vice president of nursing services. She says the hospital instead sent medical masks, gloves and medicines.
Doctors at the hospital have now arranged for a medical mission to Guatemala. That trip is in November. The doctors plan to raise most of the money for the roughly $51,000 trip through fundraisers.
The World Health Organization says Ebola has killed 1,145 people in West Africa, including 413 in Liberia.
