FERGUSON, Mo. (AP) — Authorities say seven arrests have been made and one person is in critical condition with a gunshot wounded after police began enforcing a midnight curfew in Ferguson, Missouri, where an unarmed black teen was shot and killed by a white officer. Authorities say concerns about a man flashing a gun and others positioned on the roof of a barbecue restaurant they'd broken into prompted the strong response. Most protesters observed the curfew.
KIEV, Ukraine (AP) — Details are few but Ukraine says one of its fighter jets has been shot down after attacking separatist rebels in Luhansk, in the eastern part of the country. A spokesman says the pilot ejected and was taken to a secure place. The city of Luhansk is encircled by Ukrainian forces. Donetsk, the largest rebel-held city, is also suffering through fighting.
CAIRO (AP) — A Palestinian negotiator isn't expressing as much optimism today about talks with Israel to end the fighting in Gaza. The deadline on the latest temporary cease-fire is late tomorrow. Both sides returned to Cairo today to resume the indirect negotiations.
HAEMI, South Korea (AP) — Pope Francis is emphasizing his comments are a "fraternal" not political effort to reach out to China. Francis says he wants to improve relations and insists that the Catholic Church isn't coming in as a "conqueror" but is rather a partner in dialogue. Francis is currently in South Korea. China cut relations with the Vatican in 1951, after the Communist Party took power and set up its own church outside the pope's authority.
TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — The head of the United Nations nuclear watchdog organization is in Iran for meetings with top officials as world powers continue to negotiate with the Islamic Republic for a permanent deal over its contested nuclear program. Those talks face a November deadline after an interim deal was struck last year.
