SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — The rate of unemployed Utah residents increased slightly for the first time in five months to 3.6 percent in July.
Utah's jobless rate has steadily decreased as the state has recovered from the economic recession, when unemployment peaked at 8.4 percent.
Before the economic slowdown in late 2008, Utah's rate hovered around 3.4 percent.
The latest jobless report released Friday by the state Department of Workforce Services shows about 51,800 people were unemployed and looking for work in July. The June unemployment rate was 3.5 percent.
DWS reports the construction, and trade, transportation and utilities industries gained the most new jobs last month, followed by education and health services.
The national unemployment rate in July was 6.2 percent, up from 6.1 percent a month earlier.
