SALT LAKE CITY — A man who was allegedly smashing car windows in with a metal pipe was arrested after he started swinging the pole at officers, police say.
Police received a call around 8:10 a.m. Thursday morning that a man was breaking car windows with a metal pipe in a parking lot near 645 S. 200 West, said Salt Lake Police Detective Dennis McGowan. Officers were dispatched to the scene and found at least one car with windows smashed.
The officers found James Mason, 22, near a TRAX line and asked him to put the pipe down. Mason then began swearing and swinging at the officers and taunting them to shoot him, McGowan said.
Police were able to take down Mason with a Taser without getting injured. McGowan said it's “quite possible” Mason was under the influence of something but they do not have a positive lab test at this time.
Mason was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail on aggravated assault.
