Marc Giauque reportingMany pets are considered to be part of the family, and when we lose one it's especially sad. Now, for the first time in the Salt Lake Valley, there is a special place pets can be buried. Cottonwood Canyons Pet Memorial Garden held its grand opening today. It's a park located within Memorial View Cemetery on 3115 E. 7800 South in Cottonwood Heights.

The memorial garden includes statues, memorial walls, figures of animals at play, even a chrome fire hydrant.

Pet Memorial Garden Coordinator Christine Engh says, "We want it to look like a place where you could come and imagine your pet running -- running through the grass, through those shrubs, the trees, just playing -- not looking just like strictly like a normal pet garden." Engh says there's also a special section for police K-9, military service animals and personal service animals.

The president of Memorial View Cemetery says every life is important to be remembered, human or pet.

There are only two other pet cemeteries in Utah; one is Ogden and the other is in Kanab.
