SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) — Everett Golson has reclaimed the job as Notre Dame's starting quarterback after missing last season because of academic impropriety.

Coach Brian Kelly said Wednesday that Golson would start against Rice on Aug. 30 and hopes he'll be the starter for the season. Kelly cited Golson's overall understanding of the offense, how he's handled himself with the team and leadership skills as reasons he beat out sophomore Malik Zaire.

Golson hasn't played for the Irish since a 42-14 loss to Alabama in the national championship game two seasons ago. Golson says he feels a heightened responsibility, saying it's his job to make sure the offense is running smoothly.

Kelly said Zaire was unhappy with the news but went out and practiced well.
