PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Nike co-founder Phil Knight and his wife Penny are giving $25 million to Providence Heath & Services for heart care.
Providence officials announced the donation Tuesday. The money will go toward a new cardiovascular center at Providence St. Vincent Medical Center.
Dr. Dan Oseran, head of the institute, told The Oregonian newspaper (http://is.gd/FKhYQC ) that Providence is the top provider of cardiovascular services in the state, serving more than more than 13,000 people annually.
According to the Centers for Disease and Prevention, heart disease kills 600,000 people a year in the United States, making it the leading cause of death.
