SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Riders of Utah's TRAX light rail system are pushing for more late night and weekend service, but the Utah Transit Authority says it needs more money to offer that.

UTA President Michael Allegra said Monday that the agency knows there's a demand for the increased service.

Allegra says the agency is considering several ways it could raise enough money to offer those services.

One option would be restructuring fares to charge riders by distance traveled instead of a flat fee.

Another option is asking cities and businesses that would benefit from the extra service to help pay for it.

The Salt Lake Tribune reports (http://bit.ly/1oGKJg3 ) the agency could also push for a sales-tax hike to gain extra revenue.

Local sales taxes account for about 70 percent of UTA's revenues.
