SALT LAKE CITY — More people are signing a petition asking UTA to consider adding more late-night bus and TRAX service.
Many poeple are simply adding their name to the moveon.org petition. Others are leaving comments, like how much they need late-night service. One commenter said it feels like UTA tucks them into bed at 11.
But the Taylorsvile man who started the petition, Alex Cragun, said he and many other people work odd shifts into the night.
"I've missed the last bus and had to walk an hour and a half to my house," he said.
Cragun also said more late-night routes could help some people avoid DUIs.
“Saturdays or Friday nights they stay out late, and some of them choose to drink, and some of them would really love to have the option to take public transit to get home,” he said.
Cragun was happy to see 2,200 signatures as of Monday morning.
UTA said the recession meant hours had to be cut. Now the agency is looking at how to allocate resources. Other groups want more weekend service or midday service.
UTA officials supported a legislative bill that would have allowed cities to raise taxes, but the measure did not pass. Cragun doesn't know if it would take a tax increase or increased fares.
"I don't care how it gets done, I just want it to get done," he said. “I personally, I don’t care how frequent it is. I just want the opportunity for people who work late nights or don’t have cars or who can’t drive, to get home."
