GUATEMALA CITY (AP) — Guatemalan police have detained seven alleged migrant smugglers who were part of a network that reached to the Mexico-U.S. border.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection said in a statement Thursday that Guatemalan authorities arrested the six men and one woman in the province of Quetzaltenango.
It said the group and two other people arrested in Mexico are part of a network of human smuggling organizations that recruited, organized and transported people, including unaccompanied children, from Central America to the U.S.-Mexico border.
Authorities also found bank accounts belonging to the alleged smugglers with money movements that added up to more than $3 million.
U.S. officials said the arrests were a result of cooperation between Guatemalan prosecutors and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
