MOSCOW (AP) — Russian President Vladimir Putin is making it clear that he's willing to inflict hardships on the Russian people rather than yield to western pressure on Ukraine. Today, Russia retaliated for sanctions over Ukraine by banning most food imports from the West. It's a blow to Europe, and also takes aim at hurting the U.S., Canada and Australia. The ban covers all imports of meat, fish, fruit, vegetables and milk products from the U.S. and Canada, as well as all 28 EU countries, plus Norway and Australia. It will last for a year.
BAGHDAD (AP) — There's another significant gain for Sunni militants in Iraq -- who now control the country's largest hydroelectric dam. As the Islamic State group expands its hold in northern Iraq, it has forced back Kurdish forces while chasing minority religious communities from their homes. And at the White House, President Barack Obama has been talking with His national security team about how to respond. Officials say there could be direct military strikes to try to stop the gains of the Islamic militants, as well as humanitarian relief for the displaced religious minorities.
WASHINGTON (AP) — A U.S. official says the current Ebola crisis in West Africa could end up sickening more people than all other previous outbreaks of the disease combined. Dr. Tom Frieden, who heads the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, told lawmakers that the disease is affecting a part of Africa that has never dealt with Ebola before. He didn't rule out the possibility that a traveler could arrive in the U.S. infected with Ebola -- but he said he's confident there won't be a large Ebola outbreak here.
HONOLULU (AP) — Residents of parts of Hawaii have been shaking as they await the arrival of two hurricanes, but it's not out of fear. Hawaii's Big Island was hit with a 4.5 magnitude earthquake today, just hours before the first of two hurricanes swirling toward the islands was scheduled to hit. The quake didn't cause any major damage. It struck as residents were waking up to make last-minute trips to grocery stores and boarding up their homes ahead of the first hurricane set to hit the Hawaiian islands in more than two decades.
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Police say a woman who flew from San Jose to Los Angeles without a boarding pass has been arrested again at Los Angeles International Airport. Airport police say Marilyn Jean Hartman was taken into custody at Terminal 7 this morning. A judge yesterday had ordered her to stay away from the LA airport after repeated attempts to sneak aboard planes.
