RAFAH, Gaza Strip (AP) — A U.N. official says it appears that an Israeli airstrike is to blame for the deaths of 10 Palestinians near a U.N. boys school in the Gaza town of Rafah that was serving as a shelter. Dozens more were wounded, including children. The attack came as Israel was signaling that it is scaling back its nearly monthlong offensive in Gaza against Hamas militants.
DONETSK, Ukraine (AP) — Body parts found by international investigators in the fields of eastern Ukraine where a Malaysian jetliner came down have been delivered in refrigerated trucks to the city of Kharkiv (HAHR'-kihv). The remains, and personal belongings, were apparently overlooked by local emergency workers after the plane carrying 298 people was shot down July 17.
BEIJING (AP) — A strong earthquake has rattled southwest China, knocking out some communication lines. There are no reports so far of injuries. The U.S. Geological Survey says the magnitude-6.1 quake hit Yunnan province Sunday afternoon.
ALTURAS, Calif. (AP) — California Gov. Jerry Brown has declared a state of emergency because more than a dozen wildfires are threatening homes and infrastructure. The fires in the central and far northern part of the state have burned thousands of acres, destroyed homes and damaged critical infrastructure. Dry lightning and severe drought conditions are exacerbating the fire danger.
ATLANTA (AP) — Doctors at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta are anticipating the arrival of Nancy Writebol, an American aid worker infected with Ebola, within the next few days. Dr. Kent Brantly, who was also infected with the deadly virus in Liberia, arrived at the hospital yesterday. Both will be treated in a special isolation unit. Officials are confident the public will not be in any danger.
