SOUTH SALT LAKE — Police took a man into custody after a SWAT standoff ended without incident.
Police responded to reports of a domestic violence situation around 7 p.m. Sunday, according to Gary Keller of the South Salt Lake Police Department.
Keller said the 33-year-old male got into a fight with his 41-year-old girlfriend and held a gun to her head. The woman was not injured.
"They were boyfriend and girlfriend," Keller said. "From what I'm told, they've known each other off and on for about a year, year and a half."
The man barricaded himself in an apartment, Keller said. Police communicated with the man, and he eventually came out of the apartment peacefully.
"Police negotiated or were able to talk him down, he walked out and surrendered himself to police officers," Keller said.
According to Keller, police did not find the handgun on the individual and were still awaiting a search warrant late Sunday evening.
Because the situation occurred in a multiunit apartment complex, the surrounding units were evacuated.
"We have a large amount of people who've been displaced. They're actually out on the street here waiting to get back in their homes," Keller said.
Residents were allowed to return to their homes later Sunday night.
Keller said he was unable to confirm the man's identity at the time and was unsure if the man had any criminal history.
