DENVER (AP) — President Barack Obama today headlines his first fundraiser for a Senate candidate who's in danger of losing in November -- but the candidate himself won't be by his side. In a last-minute switch, the campaign of Colorado Sen. Mark Udall (YOO'-dahl) says the Democrat plans to stay in Washington to vote on Obama's nominee to lead the Department of Housing and Urban Development. The decision could spark new questions about the political risks for vulnerable Democrats in being linked to an increasingly unpopular president.
WASHINGTON (AP) — Obama administration officials are defending their response to the immigration crisis on the southwest border. And they're promising to stem the tide of unaccompanied children arriving from Central America. In testimony prepared for a Senate hearing today, the official say they are trying to increase detention space and are working with governments in the region. Their testimony comes a day after President Barack Obama asked Congress for $3.7 billion to deal with the crisis.
JERUSALEM (AP) — According to Israel's prime minister, the country's army is "ready for all possibilities." Thousands of Israeli troops have been stationed along the border with the Gaza Strip in advance of a possible ground operation. Israel says it has struck about 200 Hamas targets in Gaza today in the second day of an offensive there. Benjamin Netanyahu says the operation will "expand and continue" until rocket fire aimed at Israel comes to an end.

The storms killed five people, destroyed or damaged numerous houses and left more than 200,000 without electricity. In the rural New York town of Smithfield, four people were killed and at least four homes were destroyed.
