KILL DEVIL HILLS, N.C. (AP) — Hurricane Arthur has made landfall near the southern end of North Carolina's Outer Banks. The National Hurricane Center says the storms center reached land about 11:15 p.m. between Cape Lookout and Beaufort, North Carolina. The Category 2 storm has maximum sustained winds of 100 mph.
NEW YORK (AP) — Flooding has knocked out service on part of three New York City subway lines, the 1, 2 and 3. Service between Times Square and 96th street has been suspended. The problem is flash flooding caused by thunderstorms. They dumped intense rain and hail.
MCALLEN, Texas (AP) — Texas Gov. Rick Perry has told lawmakers holding a hearing in south Texas that the thousands of Central American children crossing over into Texas represent a humanitarian crisis and a national security concern. More than 52,000 unaccompanied children have been apprehended since October. Most are from Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador, and say they are fleeing pervasive gang violence and crushing poverty.
WASHINGTON (AP) — After getting off to a sluggish start, the economy is revving up. Employers added 288,000 jobs in June and helped cut the unemployment rate to 6.1 percent, the lowest since 2008. It was the fifth straight monthly jobs gain above 200,000 — the best such stretch since the late 1990s tech boom. Some investors are giddy. The Dow surged 92 points to top 17,000 for the first time.
INKSTER, Mich. (AP) — State police say a Michigan man accused of killing a 2-year-old girl shot her in front of her father to torture him. Authorities in Inkster, a Detroit suburb, say the suspect intended to kill the child and then her father so that it would be the last thing he saw. He's being held without bond and charged with first-degree murder.
