BOSTON (AP) — Jake Arrieta flirted with a no-hitter for the second consecutive start while leading the Chicago Cubs past the Red Sox 2-0 in Boston on Monday. Arrieta's gem ended when Stephen Drew singled with two out in the bottom of the eighth. Arrieta is 4-0 with a 0.78 ERA and 46 strikeouts in 34 2/3 innings over his last five starts.
DETROIT (AP) — The Tigers won a battle of American League division leaders with a comeback win against Oakland. The A's led 4-1 until Rajai (RAH'-zhay) Davis hit a grand slam in the bottom of the ninth to lift the Tigers past Oakland 5-4. The Tigers won for the ninth time in 11 games and dealt the Athletics just their third loss in 12 games.
UNDATED (AP) — Germany has earned the right to face France in the quarterfinals at World Cup. The Germans trailed 1-0 entering the 92nd minute before pulling out a 2-1 win against Algeria. The French scored in the 79th minute before benefiting from an own goal to complete a 2-0 triumph over Nigeria.
LONDON (AP) — Top seed Novak Djokovic (JOH'-koh-vihch) and No. 3 Andy Murray have played themselves into the Wimbledon quarterfinals. Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (joh-WIHL'-freed SAHN'-gah) 6-3, 6-4, 7-6 after Murray completed a 6-4, 6-3, 7-6 victory South Africa's Kevin Anderson. Grigor Dimitrov (GREE-gohr dih-MEE'-trahv) and Marin Cilic (CHEE'-leech) also won their fourth-round matches in straight sets, and Stan Wawrinka (vahv-REEN'-kah) won his third-round match in three sets.
LONDON (AP) — Women's fourth seed Agnieszka Radwanska (ag-nee-EHS'-kah rahd-WAHN'-skah) was ousted in the fourth round at Wimbledon, falling to Ekaterina Makarova (eh-kat-ah-REE'-nuh mak-ah-ROH'-vah) 6-3, 6-0. Joining Makarova in the women's quarterfinals are Eugenie Bouchard (yoo-GEE'-nee boo-SHAHRD'), Petra Kvitova (kuh-VIT'-oh-vah), Lucie Safarova and Barbora Zahlavova Strycova, who surprised No. 16 Caroline Wozniacki (wohz-nee-AK'-ee) in straight sets.
