JERUSALEM (AP) — Israel has launched a series of Intense airstrikes early Tuesday in Gaza. The military says 34 targets have been struck across the Hamas-controlled territory. The military said the airstrikes were a response to a barrage of 18 rockets fired into Israel since late Sunday. They came a day after the bodies of three Israeli teen hitchhikers were found. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu blames Hamas for the killings.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The recent blitz by Sunni insurgents in Iraq is prompting more security precautions by the U.S. in Baghdad. Officials say another 300 troops have been sent to provide additional security at the U.S. Embassy and elsewhere in Iraq. And the State Department says it's moving a "small number" of embassy staffers in Baghdad to U.S. consulates in Irbil -- in northern Iraq and Basra, in southern Iraq.

KIEV, Ukraine (AP) — Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko says government forces "will attack" pro-Russian separatists in eastern Ukraine now that a unilateral cease-fire has ended. The fragile cease-fire expired Monday night. Rebels had been given a chance to disarm to begin a broader peace process.

WASHINGTON (AP) —President Barack Obama has found someone to head the troubled Veterans Affairs Department. He nominated former Procter & Gamble executive Robert McDonald. Obama says McDonald is a person of integrity and "an expert in making organizations better." An administration review found that the department is marred by mismanagement and long waiting-times for veterans.

DETROIT (AP) — General Motors has added 8.2 million vehicles to those being recalled because of faulty ignition switches. The latest models with the problem include the Chevrolet Malibu from 1997 to 2005, the Pontiac Grand Prix from 2004 to 2008 and the 2003-2014 Cadillac CTS. GM has recalled 29 million vehicles this year.
