PORTO ALEGRE, Brazil (AP) — Shkodran Mustafi will get his first World Cup start for Germany in the second round match against Algeria on Monday.
Mustafi replaces center back Mats Hummels, who is out with the flu. Mustafi will start at right back, with Jerome Boateng moving into the central position.
Germany coach Joachim Loew also picked Bastian Schweinsteiger over Sami Khedira for his defensive midfield, as he did in last group match against the United States. Also, Mario Goetze returned in attacking midfield for Lukas Podolski, who has an injured leg muscle.
Algeria coach Vahid Halilhodzic opted to start with the attacking duo of Hilal Soudani and Islam Slimani for the first time this tournament.
Slimani was on the bench for most of the team's opening match but has scored in the last two games and was the team's standout player when it beat South Korea 4-2.
Halilhodzic has used 19 players in the team's campaign so far.
During pre-match warmups, a fan holding an Algerian flag ran onto the field and was quickly taken away by security officers.
The winner of Monday's match will face France on Friday in the quarterfinals at the Maracana Stadium in Rio de Janeiro.
