WASHINGTON (AP) — The Libyan militant charged in the 2012 Benghazi attacks could face a judge as soon as today. Security at the federal courthouse in Washington D.C. has been heightened in anticipation of a possible court appearance. For now, the U.S. attorney's office is only saying Ahmed Abu Khattala (hah-TAH'-lah) is in federal law enforcement custody. Since his capture in Libya two weeks ago, he's been questioned aboard a Navy ship that transported him to the United States.

BAGHDAD (AP) — Iraq's military has launched attacks today on two cities overrun by Sunni militants in recent weeks. It carried out three airstrikes on Mosul. Residents there say one hit a commercial area that did not have any obvious military target. Meanwhile, Iraqi troops and helicopter gunships been trying to dislodge the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant Sunni from the northern city of Tikrit (tih-KREET').

DAMASCUS, Syria (AP) — A car bomb has exploded in a busy market in a rebel-held suburb of Syria's capital. Activists say at least two people were killed and dozens more wounded as they shopped on the eve of Ramadan. The blast in Douma came shortly after Russia's deputy foreign minister, on a visit to Damascus, called on the United States and Europe to take "serious" steps to combat terrorism, warning that several Middle Eastern countries are threatened.

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — The National Park Service is backing away from its proposal to use dredged sand to fight erosion on North Carolina's Shackleford Banks. The wilderness area is home to about 100 wild horses but no humans. The superintendent of Cape Lookout National Seashore says in a letter to the Army Corps of Engineers that coastal scientists have advised him that the plan to put dredged sand on Shackleford Banks wouldn't limit erosion. Environmentalists say the decision is the right one because the erosion is a natural occurrence on barrier islands.

LONDON (AP) — Police in England say two Ryanair jets have collided at London's Stansted Airport, but none of the crew members or passengers were injured. Both pilots were given breath tests after the incident, but police say there were no signs of alcohol and no further action is planned. Ryanair says passengers were put on other planes after a three-hour delay.
