SNOWBIRD — A man fell to his death while hiking in Snowbird earlier in the week. His body was found Friday evening.
Police said the man was a 64 year old tourist who took the tram up and was hiking down the mountain near Twin Peaks when he had a bad fall that turned fatal.
"About 7:44 p.m. Wednesday, he sent a text to his family to show them the view from where he was at that altitude, and that's the last that anybody heard from him," Ken Hansen of the Unified Police Department.
The man's family became concerned and called police.
"I think he's been there probably since he texted that last message," Hansen said. "I think he's been there since Wednesday. He missed a flight back today."
His family filed a missing persons report Friday morning, and UPD went to the area and found his vehicle, Hansen said.
They then used a helicopter to locate the man, who had fallen nearly 400 feet down a steep grade, Hansen said.
"It looks like he had slipped and fallen in such a steep area that he had fallen quite a distance," Hansen said.
