BAGHDAD (AP) — Iraq's top Shiite cleric is ratcheting up the pressure on lawmakers to agree on a prime minister ahead of next week's meeting of the newly elected parliament. Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani is trying to avert months of wrangling in the face of a Sunni insurgent blitz over large swaths of the country. But Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki has given no indication that he'll step aside.

WASHINGTON (AP) — A new appraisal of the VA health care system concludes that medical care is beset by "significant and chronic system failures." The review, ordered by President Barack Obama, offers a series of recommendations, including a need for more doctors, nurses and trained administrative staff. But Republicans say the VA's problems stem from mismanagement, not lack of resources.

NEW YORK (AP) — Facebook says prosecutors building a sweeping disabilities-benefit fraud case got a trove of data from the accounts of more than 380 people. Facebook turned over the information but is appealing the court order that required it to do so, saying it was an intrusion on users' privacy. The Manhattan district attorney's office and a judge say the search warrants were justified.

DETROIT (AP) — General Motors is extending its record-breaking string of safety problems, announcing three more recalls that will bring GM's total for the year to 48. The largest affects almost 467,000 four-wheel-drive Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickups, as well as GMC Yukon and Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban SUVs. That recall involves transmission problems.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — Six people — including three children — are dead after a station wagon lost control on a busy Kentucky highway, crossed the median and plowed head-on into a minivan, sparking a fiery crash. The crash Thursday night killed a family of five along with a woman traveling in a church van who had joined a group that was helping her get out of the sex industry.
