DAVIE, Fla. (AP) — Authorities have identified a landscaper who was killed by an industrial wood chipper in South Florida.
Davie police spokesman Dale Engle says the deceased is 42-year-old Hernan Gutierrez. He says Gutierrez and two other people were clearing brush Monday afternoon when the apparent work accident occurred.
Police and firefighters quickly responded, but Engle said it was obvious that the victim was already dead. He described the scene as gruesome and was unable to compare it to anything else he'd ever seen.
There was no immediate suspicion of foul play, but police were still trying to determine exactly what happened. Gutierrez's co-workers weren't with him when he went into the machine.
Engle said the wood chipper and remains have been turned over to the medical examiner's office.
