GENEVA (AP) — The U.N. is counting the dead from this month's violence in Iraq -- and it says at least 1,075 people have been killed. The vast majority were civilians. The deaths came as a Sunni insurgency takes over key areas of the country. A spokesman for the U.N.'s human rights office says the killings include "a number of verified summary executions."
JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — The only voters who can't take part in today's Republican Senate runoff race in Mississippi are those who cast votes in the Democratic primary earlier this month. The runoff pits six-term incumbent Thad Cochran against a tea party-backed challenger, Chris McDaniel. Cochran finished about 1,400 votes behind McDaniel in the earlier three-person primary, but nobody received a majority.
WASHINGTON (AP) — Homeland Security Secretary Jeh (jay) Johnson is telling Congress today that the Obama administration is looking at every possible option to help respond to a flood of immigrants crossing the border illegally in southern Texas. Since the start of the budget year in October, Border Patrol agents have apprehended more than 52,000 immigrant children traveling alone. Most of the young immigrants are from Honduras, El Salvador and Guatemala and are being caught in Rio Grande Valley of Texas.
NEW YORK (AP) — Stocks are mixed in early trading, with the major indexes still hovering near all-time highs. The Nasdaq composite index opened slightly higher, while the Dow and the S&P were a bit lower in the opening minutes.
MIAMI (AP) — Police say two people are dead and 10 others are wounded following an early morning shooting in Miami's Liberty City neighborhood. A 20-year-old man and a teenage girl died. Police also say a 17-year-old girl was critically wounded in the shooting, which happened near an intersection around 2:30 a.m. Police are trying to figure out what prompted the shooting, which left the sidewalk littered with dozens of spent shell casings.
