SOUTH SALT LAKE — Police are investigating the scene where a man was found dead inside a silver, 4-door pickup truck Monday evening.
At around 8 p.m., emergency dispatchers began receiving reports of shots fired near the area of State Street and Helm Avenue (3645 South), South Salt Lake police spokesman Gary Keller said.
Witnesses told police the pickup was traveling westbound on Helm Avenue and just stopped in the middle of the roadway.
"We don't know if a confrontation started within the vehicle, or if there was passing vehicles or other people that were involved," Keller said.
As shots rang out, witnesses said people started scattering.
"We had multiple people — four to five, I'm told — that ran southbound from the scene, and another group of three to four that ran northbound from the scene," Keller said. "We're trying to confirm that and track down those people."
A man who appeared to be between 30 and 40 years old was found dead inside the pickup, Keller said. Officers are "combing the area," trying to find leads, he said.
Anyone who was in the area at the time of the shooting or believes they have information on what happened is asked to call the South Salt Lake police at 801-412-3606.
