UNDATED (AP) — A person with knowledge of the decision tells The Associated Press that Spurs forward Tim Duncan has decided to exercise the option on his contract and will return next season. He will make about $10.3 million next season in the final year of a two-year agreement that was drawn up specifically to allow the Spurs the financial flexibility to surround Duncan with top-shelf talent. The decision comes after the 38-year-old Duncan helped the Spurs win their fifth NBA championship in 16 years.
UNDATED (AP) — Brazil and Mexico have clinched berths in the second round of World Cup. Neymar scored twice in Brazil's 4-1 rout of Cameroon, and Mexico scored three times in a 10-minute span of the second half to beat Croatia 3-1. Also yesterday, the Netherlands beat Chile 2-0 and Spain downed Australia 3-0.
WIMBLEDON, England (AP) — Andy Murray has begun his Wimbledon title defense with a straight-sets victory as he bids to become the first British male to retain the title since Fred Perry in 1936. Top-seed Novak Djokovic (NOH'-vak JOH'-kuh-vich) had little trouble in his opening match, winning in straight sets. Also advancing were sixth seed Tomas Berdych (TOH'-mahs bur-DEEK') and No. 7 David Ferrer (feh-REHR'), along with women's Second seed Li Na (lee nah) and former No. 1 Victoria Azarenka (ah-zah-REN'-kuh).
UNDATED (AP) — Goaltender Dominik Hasek (HAH'-shehk), forwards Mike Modano and Peter Forsberg and defenseman Rob Blake will enter the Hockey Hall of Fame together Nov. 17 in Toronto. They will be inducted with former referee Bill McCreary and the late Pat Burns, who will be enshrined posthumously as a coach in the builder category.
VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) — The Vancouver Canucks has hired Willie Desjardins (day-zhar-DAN') as their coach as their new coach. The 57-year old earns his first NHL coaching job after leading the AHL's Texas Stars to the Calder Cup. Desjardins succeeds John Tortorella (tohr-tohr-EHL'-uh), who was fired after coaching the Canucks for one year.
