SALT LAKE CITY — Baseball fans may be slowed in their travel to the Salt Lake Bees' Smith's Ballpark due to a $2.6 million construction project outside the stadium.
Construction began Monday from 400 West to State Street along 1300 South and will continue for the next four months. Although the street will be reduced from four lanes to two while the project is underway, Salt Lake residents will be receiving a new concrete road.
"They are taking it all out and it will be new. They are making it concrete," said David Przybyla, marketing manager for the Clyde Company. "The road is probably in really bad shape and needs to be redone and concrete generally lasts longer."
Baseball fans should expect a slower commute to the 48 remaining home games through September. However, the parking lot and sidewalk leading to the park will remain open for pedestrians.
"Half of the road will be closed so it will be two-way traffic with one lane. There are two lanes each way right now so that's going to cause some congestion when they do that," Przybyla said.
The project will be a major improvement in access and safety, Bees General Manager Marc Amicone said.
