PINEHURST, N.C. (AP) — Michelle Wie (WEE) is in position to challenge for her first major title, taking a three-shot lead into the third round of the U.S. Women's Open. She's the only one to post two under-par rounds on the tough Pinehurst No. 2 course. Kraft Nabisco Championship winner Lexi Thompson is in second place and is the only other golfer under par.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Adam Wainwright takes the mound for the Cardinals today against the Phillies after skipping his last start due to a bout of tendinitis in his pitching elbow. The St. Louis ace is 9-3 with a 2.15 ERA heading into today's game.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Virginia and Mississippi resume their lightning-suspended game at the College World Series today, with no score in the second inning. Virginia could earn a spot in the best-of-three title series with a win. Texas and Vanderbilt square off for the second straight day, with the winner advancing to the championship series.

UNDATED (AP) — The push to the World Cup title goes on with three matches on today's schedule in Brazil. Argentina can earn a spot in the knockout round with a win over Iran. Germany is looking to take command of Group G when they take on Ghana, and Bosnia-Herzegovina meets Nigeria.

SONOMA, Calif. (AP) — NASCAR qualifying is on tap today at the road course at Sonoma. Jeff Gordon has the points lead heading into the weekend and has put together an impressive road course resume with a NASCAR-record nine wins. Five of them have come at Sonoma.
