RECIFE, Brazil (AP) — Costa Rica followed up its surprise win over Uruguay with another World Cup stunner, beating four-time champion Italy 1-0 to secure a spot in the next round. Costa Rican captain Bryan Ruiz scored in the 44th minute. Costa Rica's win knocks 0-2 England out of the tournament.
RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — Roy Hodgson has been asked by the English Football Association to remain in charge of the national team until 2016 as planned despite early elimination from the World Cup. England opened the tournament in Brazil with losses to Italy and Uruguay, and won't advance to the knockout round.
PINEHURST, N.C. (AP) — Michelle Wie (WEE) birdied the last two holes for a second straight 2-under 68 and the clubhouse lead in the second round of the U.S. Women's Open. Wie's 4-under total gives first-round leader Stacy Lewis, among others, something to shoot at. The world's top-ranked player is playing this afternoon.
NEW YORK (AP) — The Rangers are buying out the contract of veteran forward Brad Richards, creating much-needed salary-cap space and parting ways with New York's de facto captain one week after being eliminated from the Stanley Cup finals. The 34-year-old Richards had six years remaining on the nine-year, $60 million deal he signed in 2011.
OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Vanderbilt third baseman Xavier Turner has been declared ineligible for an unspecified violation of NCAA rules and will not play in the rest of the College World Series. He was batting .333 in the Commodores' first two CWS games and started 63 of 64 games this season, hitting .284.
