SALT LAKE CITY — A man was arrested Thursday night after firing a handgun outside a bar, police said.

The incident occurred around 6:24 p.m. outside Bar-X at 155 E. 200 South, according to Salt Lake City police detective Dennis McGowan. Witnesses said the man was riding around the parking lot in circles on a bicycle and he appeared to be under the influence of narcotics, McGowan said.

"His speech is deliberate and it's difficult for him. His demeanor, his actions, everything — not only according to police but according to witnesses — is erratic, so police belive he was possibly under the influence of some narcotic," he said.

The man had a handgun and allegedly fired a shot in the parking lot. When he was approached by witnesses, he brandished the weapon and threatened them, McGowan said. The man fled the scene on his bicycle and was found by police a few blocks away.

Daniel Archuleta, 27, was arrested and booked into the Salt Lake County Jail. He was arrested on suspicion of aggravated assault, possession of stolen property and failure to stop at the command of a law enforcement officer.

Utah state court records show that Archuleta was already scheduled to be sentenced in Ogden next month on a felony shoplifting conviction. In 2010, he was convicted in a violent domestic violence-related assault. He later violated his probation and was ordered to spend two years in jail with credit for time served.
