SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A federal judge says he'll dismiss the case against a Utah businessman charged with running a multimillion dollar Ponzi scheme. The judge says federal prosecutors delayed the trial for too long after Rick Koerber was first indicted in 2009. The Salt Lake Tribune reports Koerber's attorney is asking the judge to also prevent prosecutors from filing new charges.

OGDEN, Utah (AP) — A 46-year-old man has died on a family backpacking trip in the backcountry of Weber County. Sheriff's deputies say the Ogden family was unprepared for the cold weather in Wheatgrass Canyon. They say Duane Savage suffered from apparent diabetes complications and exposure to the cold. Two family members hiked out of the canyon to get help.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A Bayfield, Colorado, man died in the crash of a small plane in southeastern Utah. Officials say 62-year-old Miles Reece was killed on impact. No other passengers were on the plane. A friend was accompanying him on the trip, flying another plane. The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating the crash.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Salt Lake City police have launched an internal investigation into an officer's decision to shoot and kill a dog that was in its own backyard. Police say the officer was searching for a missing 3-year-old boy on Wednesday when he fired at the 110-pound Weimaraner. The officer said the dog was acting aggressively.
