SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — A report is calling for an investigation after California auditors found 39 cases where female state prison inmates may not have understood they were being sterilized. The audit was prompted by the Center for Investigative Reporting, which last year found that doctors had sterilized nearly 150 female prisoners without obtaining proper consent.
WASHINGTON (AP) — Some 300 U.S. military advisers are heading to Iraq at the order of President Barack Obama. The advisers will help quell a rising insurgency. They'll join up to 275 U.S. forces that Obama had previously announced would be positioned in and around Iraq to provide security and support for the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad and other American interests.
WASHINGTON (AP) — The House has voted for new curbs on government spying on Americans a year after the revelations about the National Security Agency surveillance. In a surprise vote late Thursday, the GOP-led House backed an amendment to a defense spending bill that would bar warrantless collection of personal online information. It also would prohibit access for the NSA and CIA into commercial tech products.
DENVER (AP) — A Colorado fire official now says a cadaver dog targeted a scent in the ruins of a home destroyed by an explosion, but it did not find a body. KMGH-TV reports that Thornton fire spokeswoman Lisa Wilson corrected a previous statement Thursday night that said the dog had found a body. Officials now say the dog only picked up a scent.
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A mug shot of a Northern California man arrested on felony weapons charges has gone viral on social media. The photo of Jeremy Meeks has attracted more than 28,000 "likes" and drawing comments praising his high cheek bones, chiseled face and striking blue eyes. Not everyone was approving; one wrote, "He may be a tad bit cute, but with six felonies, he ain't that cute."
