RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — Italy and Costa Rica meet in the World Cup today in a match that 0-2 England will be watching with a lot of interest. A Costa Rica win or draw would put England out of contention. Also on the schedule is a meeting between France and Switzerland, who both won their openers, and a likely elimination game between Ecuador and Honduras.
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Royals return home to a Kansas City tonight to open a series with Seattle one day after having their 10-game winning streak snapped at Detroit. James Shields will take the hill for the AL Central-leading Royals looking for his sixth straight victory.
OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Mississippi faces the possibility of elimination from the College World Series for a second straight day with a rematch against Virginia. The Cavaliers have won both of their games in the double-elimination tournament, including a 2-1 victory over the Rebels Sunday. Texas and unbeaten Vanderbilt also meet, with the Longhorns facing elimination.
LONDON (AP) — Defending champion Andy Murray faces 104th-ranked David Goffin (goh-FAHN') of Belgium in his opening match at Wimbledon, which begins Monday. Murray could wind up facing Novak Djokovic (NOH'-vak JOH'-kuh-vich) in the semifinals. In the women's draw, top-ranked and five-time champion Serena Williams could wind up facing French Open champion Maria Sharapova in the quarterfinals.
