SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) — San Jose officials have passed tough new medical marijuana rules that will require the vast majority of city dispensaries to close within a year.
The San Jose Mercury News (http://bit.ly/1kOyTn8 ) reports the City Council voted 7-3 late Tuesday to limit existing and new pot shops to a handful of select industrial areas that make up less than one percent of the city.
Dispensaries that will be allowed to remain open will have to comply with costly new restrictions.
There are roughly 80 marijuana stores in San Jose.
Owners say the new rules effectively amount to a ban, making it virtually impossible to do business in the city.
Opponents pointed to research showing that kids are able to easily obtain marijuana from dispensaries, either through illegal drug deals or by obtaining medical cards.
