SALT LAKE CITY — Two men were arrested after threatening a homeowner's daughter and breaking into their house Sunday, police said.

Joseph Madsen, 25, and Troy Barnett, 26, kicked in a side door to force entry into the house, which is located near 900 West and Riley Circle, police said. Madsen pointed a handgun at those in the home after breaking in, according to documents from the Salt Lake County Jail.

“(The men) were calling the daughter beforehand and threatening her,” said Salt Lake City Police Det. Veronica Montoya. “She chose to not answer the calls, and then they showed up at the home.”

The father heard a commotion when the men kicked in the door. He then grabbed a handgun and confronted the two males as they came in, Montoya said. The two men fled after the father recognized them, according to investigators.

The two men were located shortly after the incident and arrested on suspicion of aggravated burglary and aggravated assault, police said. They were booked into the Salt Lake County Jail.

“I think the two suspects are very lucky they weren’t hurt, because I think most people would agree if somebody comes kicking your door in and is armed and you’re armed — I’m really surprised he didn’t hurt them," Montoya said. "Luckily no one was hurt, in both cases."
