(KSL News) -- Brigham Young University is re-opening its study abroad program in Jerusalem, for the first time since 2000.
BYU will hold a fall semester session at the Center for Near Eastern Studies in Jerusalem, located on the Mount of Olives.
University officials sent nearly 175 students home early from the center during fall semester 2000, after students were sequestered inside the building for nearly a month as violence erupted on the city's streets.
LDS Church leaders and school officials say they consulted with the government before deciding to hold classes at the center.
Students who have attended school at the Provo campus for at least two years can apply for the Jerusalem program starting June 26th.
School officials say future programs will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.
