LAS VEGAS (AP) — Nevada gambling regulators gave preliminary approval to a Malaysian conglomerate that wants to build a $4 billion Asian-themed resort on the Las Vegas Strip.
Nevada Gaming Commission members met Thursday and found Genting Berhad suitable for a state license.
Genting officials say they plan to break ground this year on Resorts World Las Vegas, which would incorporate 80 percent to 85 percent of the buildings in the half-built Echelon project, which stalled amid the recession.
The initial phase is expected to include 3,000 hotel rooms, a large casino and a 4,000-seat theater. Company officials say they might also add a theme park.
The project is one of several expected to breathe new life into the Strip's less-trafficked north end. The SLS resort is set to open on Labor Day weekend.
