OBERLIN, La. (AP) — The Allen Parish School Board is seeking a $110,000 grant to continue professional development for teachers in an effort to boost student test scores.

The American Press reported (http://bit.ly/1eOXZNb) the School Board will seek the funding from the Rapides Foundation's Effective Schools program.

"We mostly use the money for staff development so that we can continue to increase our academic scores for our students," Superintendent Michael Doucet said. "Anything we can do to improve the academics."

In the past, the funding has been used to provide education consultants and to hold workshops for educators, he said.

The grant is part of a five-year cycle which must be renewed each year, Doucet said.

Rapides Foundation director of programs and communications Annette Beuchler said $1.3 million in grant funding is expected to be allocated for the 2014-2015 school year.

"Since 1998, the Rapides Foundation has been working with the nine public school districts in its service area to improve educational attainment and student achievement," she said.

If approved later this month by the foundation's trustees, the funding would be distributed among the nine districts, including schools in Allen, Vernon, Avoyelles, Catahoula, Grant, LaSalle, Natchitoches Rapides and Winn parishes.

The grant funding is through a foundation program that focuses on professional development for teachers and instructional leadership for administrators, Beuchler said.
