Samantha Hayes ReportingStrong winds were too much for three semis on I-80 late this afternoon. Two of the trucks flipped over, another was blown into the Great Salt Lake.
That stretch of I-80 heading west out of Utah is well known to truckers as a dangerous place to be when the wind picks up. When a Utah Highway Patrol trooper describes the Great Salt Lake like this you don't want to be anywhere near it.
Sgt. Greg Lundell, Utah Highway Patrol: "Large white caps, you could probably surf with the wind blowing up the water."
This truck certainly didn't surf, maybe sail is the right word. The wind blew it into the other lane.
Sgt. Lundell: "And as he tried to over correct he ended up in the water."
The driver has minor injuries and was taken to the hospital for a closer examination.
Seasoned truck drivers say there's only one way to make it through dangerous stretches like this one.
Danny Evans, Truck driver 26 years: "Hope and pray you make is through and if it gets too bad, pull over, that's the best you can do."
Jack Wade, Truck Driver: "Slow down if you are empty, just slow down. People are just going too fast and in too big of a hurry."
The driver of the semi blown into the lake complained of back and neck pain.
