SALT LAKE CITY — A man was beaten and robbed while trying to buy crack cocaine Saturday, police said.
The man went to the shelter area near 225 S. 500 West to purchase crack cocaine at about 10:47 p.m., according to the Salt Lake City Police Department. He brought a 9 mm Ruger semi-automatic handgun and 12-inch fixed buck knife with him for protection, police said.
Investigators said he met with two men who offered to sell him crystal meth instead of crack cocaine. The man only wanted to buy crack cocaine, so he refused their offer.
"During the encounter, the victim advised them he had a gun and a knife for protection and that he wanted no trouble," a statement from the police reads.
One of the men asked to see the gun and then took it from the man before beating him and taking his money and knife, according to police.
