KEARNS — A motorist caused damage to utility fixtures and ended up the backyard of a home Tuesday after police say he mixed up the brake and gas pedals of his vehicle.

Police responded at 5:42 p.m. to a traffic accident at 5652 W. Walnut View Drive. (6070 West). Officers learned that the 40-year-old driver of a Chevy Impala was in the neighborhood trying to get back onto 5600 West.

While doing so, the driver mixed up the brake and gas pedals, stepped on the gas, and drove over a fire hydrant, a light pole, a utility box, through a fence, and came to rest against a trampoline and the rear fence of a home, according to Unified Police Lt. Justin Hoyal.

The driver was not injured in the crash and was issued a citation for negligent collision, according to police. Neither drugs nor alcohol were factors in the crash, police said.

Kearns Improvement District and Rocky Mountain Power were at the scene repairing damage to the hydrant and electrical fixtures. Several homes in the neighborhood were without power after the accident.

"Fortunately there isn't a fountain of water flooding homes, and damage is fairly minimal," Hoyal said.
