Ukraine claims some progress in east...dangerous cargo

DONETSK, Ukraine (AP) — Authorities in Ukraine are claiming some success in their efforts to blunt pro-Russian militants in eastern regions. Officials say government forces reclaimed a television tower during a security operation in the eastern town of Kramatorsk. Officials say an operation began at dawn, local time, to reclaim control over the town.

INCHEON, South Korea (AP) — Documents show the sunken South Korean ferry routinely made trips overloaded with cargo, thus putting passengers at risk. The sinking has exposed enormous safety gaps in South Korea's monitoring of domestic passenger ships. Divers have recovered another body, bringing the death toll to 244 with 60 people missing.

JERUSALEM (AP) — A former head of Israel's security agency takes issue with Shin Bet's current leader. Carmi Gillon says he believes Yoram Cohen does not invest enough resources to stop recent vandalism on Palestinian and Arab Israeli property by ultranationalist Jews. The vandalism has drawn condemnation by Israeli leaders but few arrests. The Anti-Defamation League recently urged Israel to get tougher.

BEIRUT (AP) — Activists say 62 fighters are dead in rebel on rebel fighting in eastern Syria. The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights says the rebel infighting is taking place around a cluster of three villages in an oil-rich province near the Iraqi border. Hundreds of civilians have fled. Rebels from the al-Qaida breakaway group Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant are battling fighters of the al-Qaida-linked Nusra Front over territory they captured together.

ELIMSPORT, Pa. (AP) — Officials say they found "toxic levels" of carbon monoxide in the bodies of five people found dead in a small cabin in north-central Pennsylvania. Two adults and three children died. A propane heater was being used but was not properly ventilated. No signs of foul play have been found.
