BRUSSELS (AP) — Amid continued tensions in eastern Ukraine, NATO is making its military presence known along the alliance's eastern edge. NATO's secretary general says planes will be flying more missions over the Baltic region west of Ukraine, and that allied warships will also deploy to the Baltic Sea and the eastern Mediterranean. The White House says it supports the move. NATO estimates that Russia has gathered some 40,000 troops on Ukraine's eastern border, and that it could invade if it wanted to do so.
BOSTON (AP) — The man who was arrested near the Boston Marathon finish line yesterday -- carrying a backpack containing a rice cooker -- is reported to have told an officer that it was "symbolism," and that, in his words, "the performance got the best of me." That's according to a police report that was read aloud in court today at a hearing for Kayvon Edson. A judge ordered him to be sent to a state psychiatric facility for an evaluation. The arrest came on the first anniversary of the Boston Marathon bombings, carried out using pressure-cooker bombs.
BOSTON (AP) — Federal prosecutors have told a judge they have no evidence that Boston Marathon bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev (joh-HAHR' tsahr-NEYE'-ehv) knew about his brother's alleged role in a triple slaying that took place two years before the bombings. During a hearing today in Boston, a prosecutor said that a Florida man who implicated himself and Tamerlan Tsarnaev (TAM'-ehr-luhn tsahr-NEYE'-ehv) in the 2011 killings gave no indication that Tamerlan had told his brother about his alleged involvement.
PRETORIA, South Africa (AP) — After trying to cast doubts on the testimony of Oscar Pistorius during his five days on the stand at his murder trial, prosecutors at his trial in South Africa are now challenging the expert witnesses being brought forward by his defense lawyers. Testimony from a former police officer today dealt with such issues as ballistics, gunshot wounds, light and sound -- but a prosecutor asserted that the former officer wasn't an expert in any of those areas.
WASHINGTON (AP) — Some sample questions from the newly-redesigned SAT exam have been released. And they're examples of how the test is aiming for more real-world applications and analysis from students. One question asks students to calculate the foreign exchange rate that a vacationing American would pay in India. Another asks for an estimate, from a random sample, of how many 18-to-34-year-olds voted for a candidate. The new test will be rolled out in 2016.
